Henry Barrial is an independent writer-director of such award winning films as SOME BODY (2001 Sundance Film Festival in Dramatic Competition), PIG (2011) winner of 7 Festival Best Sci-Fi feature awards ,THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT (2013) and DRIVERX (2017).
Born to Cuban exiles, Barrial is originally from Miami. He attended the University of Montana where he received a B.A. in Psychology. While in Missoula, Henry wrote and performed in several theatrical productions for the Montana Repertory Theatre and the Young Rep, including his original one-man show A Night With-In Lenny Bruce.
Upon moving to Los Angeles he began studying acting (Meisner technique) at Playhouse West, but soon found that directing and writing were more his passion. Using the improvisational techniques of the Meisner training to make his first two films, Henry directed a short entitled The Lonelys, which won top awards at the 1999 San Francisco International Film Festival, 1999 Cleveland International Film Festival, and 1999 Method Fest. Then in 2000 Barrial directed and co-wrote (with Stephanie Bennett) his first feature, the ultra low-budget ($3,000) Some Body. Some Body premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival in Dramatic Competition, and was subsequently picked up for distribution by Lot 47 Films. It was released theatrically in 2002 in 15 cities across the U.S. including New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
In 2003 Barrial’s screenplay for the feature True Love was selected by the prestigious Sundance Screenwriters Lab and was performed as part of the Sundance Reading Series. True Love was ultimately produced on a micro-budget and received accolades on the festival circuit.
Henry’s next film was a mystery Lo-Fi/Sci-Fi film named PIG (2011) starring Rudolf Martin (Swordfish, NCIS). The film played at more than 30 festivals and was acquired at 2013 Comic-Con By Kino Lorber’s Horizon Movies
In 2012 Henry directed Joe Vasquez’s script for THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT about a Nuyorican family in the Bronx, is currently streaming on most platforms and was written by Joe Vasquez (Hanging With The Homeboys). Jack was produced by Sam Kitt and Michael Lieber (Flash of Genius). Cast by Sig De Miguel, the all-Latino cast features Tony Award nominee John Herrera, E. J. Bonilla (Until the Wedding) and Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn 99).
Henry’s latest film, DRIVERX, starring Patrick Fabian (Better Call Saul), Tanya Clarke (Banshee) and Desmin Borges (You’re The Worst) was released in theaters by IFC on November 30th, 2018. It is currently streaming on HULU.
Henry is currently in pre-production on a new dramedy written with Greg Pitts entitled HOT TO MAKE A MARRIAGE GREAT AGAIN (MAMGA) set to begin filming in December of 2019. When Henry is not filming, he teaches at the New York Film Academy (NYFA) – Los Angeles campus.
